Jack Grealish is sweating over his England spot as Gareth Southgate deliberates on his final EURO 2024 squad.
The Man City star was named alongside 32 other players, in a provisional squad for friendlies against Bosnia & Herzegovina and Iceland as the Three Lions preparations for Germany get underway. That group will be whittled down to 26 names before the tournaments begins, with seven players set to miss out.
Marcus Rashford would usually provide competition for Grealish but has already failed to make the cut after a disappointing season. Rather than offering a boost for the Man City star, it could leave him nervous following his own struggles this term.
The 28-year-old made just 10 Premier League starts and did not feature in City’s final four matches of the season. Even City boss Pep Guardiola accepted his charge ‘struggled this season’.
The Catalan coach suggested: “But Jack will be back at the level of last season — I’m pretty sure.”
That could prove too late for a spot at the European Championships however.
Grealish faces stiff competition from the likes of Anthony Gordon, Phil Foden, Cole Palmer and James Maddison, who have all enjoyed more fruitful years. The former Villa star could see his rivals with greater opportunity to impress too.

After being involved in City’s squad for their FA Cup final defeat, Grealish will be among a group of players handed one week off before joining up with the squad. That is while those players not involved at Wembley are set to train under Southgate’s eye this week.
Grealish was named among 11 forwards in Southgate’s selection, albeit with Harry Kane, Ivan Toney and Ollie Watkins offering an option as a true striker. That would appear to leave that area of the pitch particularly vulnerable to being the subject of at least some cuts when the England boss makes his final decision.
