Jermaine Jenas once jokingly told Gary Lineker he would not be coming for his Match of the Day presenter role “for now”.
The former Newcastle United midfielder was sacked from his presenting gig on The One Show, along with his other BBC duties, in August. The 41-year-old’s contract termination followed allegations about his behaviour towards female colleagues, with Jenas confessing to sending “inappropriate messages” during his time at the BBC.
Jenas subsequently apologised if he had made the women he messaged feel uncomfortable and admitted he considered it to be “cheating” on his wife, even though “nothing physical ever happened.” He has since kept a low profile, with confirmation coming this week that Lineker will step down from his long-time role as host of the BBC Premier League highlights show at the end of this season, after 25 years at the helm.
Several names have been linked with the vacancy, but Jenas, who was considered one of the frontrunners prior to the scandal, is unsurprisingly not among them. With rumours surrounding Lineker’s future rampant over the past 18 months and Jenas’ experience in heading Match of the Day 2, the spin-off MOTDx, and his regular role on The One Show, the ex-England star was not shy to comment on speculation in the past.
He even made a joke about it directly to Lineker while appearing as a pundit on the programme in November 2023, which hasn’t aged well given his dramatic fall from the pecking order.
Despite being a pundit himself, Jenas probed Lineker for his take on a contentious penalty call in Everton’s 3-2 victory over Crystal Palace last year, saying: “I always like the striker’s opinion,” which led to Lineker playfully retorting: “You want this job?”

That prompted the former Tottenham star to reply: “No, no, I’m alright thanks. For now.” Lineker glanced back at Jenas, saying “later,” as they shared a grin and moved on.
Speaking in April 2024, Jenas admitted to The Daily Mail that he would jump at the chance if it presented itself. He said: “I would obviously be up for it… it’s Match of the Day and it would be a great opportunity.
“I haven’t thought that far ahead but I hosted Match of the Day 2 on Sunday night, which was the first one I’ve ever done. I loved it, it felt comfortable to me, it felt normal, and I love doing The One Show as well.
“Gary has got plenty of legs in him and I don’t see him going anywhere soon but when that day comes which it will do, I would like to think that I am at least thought about to fill the position. If that is the case then I would obviously jump at it.”
Despite leaving Match of the Day, Lineker agreed a contract extension in principle with the BBC to lead its coverage of the 2026 World Cup. He will also host BBC Sport’s coverage of the FA Cup during the 2025/26 season, 35 years on from lifting the trophy as a player.
