Jordan Spieth’s trusted caddie and mate Michael Greller will be on the greens at The Sentry, looping for PGA Tour competitor Max Homa. The 2025 PGA Tour is teeing off this Thursday at Kapalua Plantation Course with The Sentry, but three-time major champ Spieth won’t be hitting the fairways in the season opener.
He’s still on the mend from wrist surgery after a mishap with his son Sammy led to an injury to his left hand. Spieth had tried to sidestep the surgeon’s knife with some rest and recuperation, but his condition took a turn for the worse during the 2024 season when a tendon in his wrist “popped out” mid-play, forcing the 31-year-old into surgery. This has put him out of play and looked to bench his caddie too.
But, as Sean Martin reports on X, Greller will be at The Sentry carrying the bag for Homa as a stand-in. A fan account dedicated to Spieth, known as Spieth Legion, also spread the word on X, stating: “Michael Greller has a new bag this week. He’s caddying for Max Homa at The Sentry. It’s just temporary. Greller’s boss, Jordan Spieth, isn’t in the field, and Homa needed a temporary fill-in. His longtime caddie, Joe Greiner, is expected to return later in the West Coast swing.”
Greller has been by Spieth’s side for 13 years since the ex-world No. 1 went pro. Their partnership dates back to the US Junior Amateur, with Greller originally taking a sabbatical from teaching to caddie for Spieth. .
Spieth and Greller have enjoyed a fruitful partnership over the years, with Spieth claiming the Masters and US Open titles in 2015, followed by The Open in 2017. However, Greller’s approach has raised eyebrows, as the duo often engage in lengthy discussions before Spieth takes his shot.
Despite this, Homa appears willing to give it a try. Homa may be seeking a change in fortunes, having last tasted victory at the 2023 Farmers Insurance Open. Following a winless 2024, which included just three top-10 finishes and four missed cuts, the 34 year old is reportedly set to reunite with his long-time caddie. However, it remains to be seen whether this plan will change depending on his performance at The Sentry.

Spieth has also struggled, failing to secure a win in 2024 and managing just four top-25 finishes, with seven missed cuts in 22 events. His last outing was at the FedEx St. Jude Championship in August, where he finished T68, missing out on qualification for the BMW Championship. Discussing his injury rehabilitation, Spieth told SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio earlier this month that his wrist is recovering well.
“Everything’s gone according to plan,” Spieth said. “I’ve been kind of hitting on a ball count the last couple weeks and then I got the full go this last weekend. The weather’s been good here in Dallas, I’ve been at it the last, well, really, I hit Nerf balls for a while so I could work on some mechanics and not have the contact.”
“Now I have zero restrictions. It feels good. None of the shots, you know, I don’t really have any problems with it. No pain, no anything. So now it’s kind of just taking care of it, continuing to do therapy probably through the New Year, and just be prepared to go start playing some golf and be prepared to play three weeks in a row. I think that’s kind of the next step is actually getting out and playing, which will be fun. It’ll be a little rusty to start for sure.”
