Manchester City captain Kyle Walker could leave the club in the January transfer window, it has been claimed.
England international Walker, 34, has been with City since joining from Tottenham back in 2017. He is a six-time Premier League champion, and was also part of the squad which beat Inter Milan to win the Champions League final in 2023.
City and Walker have found things tougher this season, though. The loss of Rodri to injury has been accompanied by a slump in the Premier League and Champions League, with Walker in and out of Pep Guardiola’s side.
The versatile defender has long been linked with a return to Sheffield United, where he started his career. Walker’s City contract runs until the summer of 2026, but he could leave before then.
According to The Mail, Walker is assessing his options. He is not the only City player said to be in that situation, with Matheus Nunes and James McAtee also reported to be weighing up whether they want to look elsewhere.
Walker got a 20-minute run-out in City’s last game at Leicester, helping Guardiola’s team record just a second league clean sheet since the end of October. The win lifted them back above Bournemouth into fifth, though they still have work to do to return to the top four.
There has been interest from the continent, with AC Milan among those to previously explore a move for Walker. However, he is thought to have had his sights set on a Bramall Lane return.

“I’ll go until my legs don’t want to go,” Walker told the BBC back in 2021 “Until they go I’ll keep running. I made it very clear I want to go back and play for Sheffield United.
“I started there, played there from when I was six or seven years old. If I am dropping down and becoming a burden, obviously not. But as long as I am still enjoying it, I’ll keep doing it.”
Sheffield United were relegated from the Premier League last season but are on track to make an immediate return. Chris Wilder’s Blades sit second in the Championship after 24 matches, two points adrift of leaders Leeds United.
They have also been the subject of a takeover in December, with COH Sports pledging to reestablish the team in the top tier of English football. COH’s Steven Rosen and Helmy Eltoukhy gave manager Wilder their backing after the £100m takeover was formalised.
“Like all Blades fans, we want to see the club competing in the top-flight of English football consistently, not just on a one-off basis, and we have been encouraged by the strong start to this season,” they said in a statement. “The team has been performing strongly and we’re committed to supporting the management team to continue this progress.”
