Manchester City defender Kyle Walker believes next week’s clash against Liverpool is “a great game to turn it around” after their 4-0 loss to Tottenham – but has warned his team-mates they need to quickly shape up.

City were ripped to shreds by Ange Postecoglou’s side at the Etihad as James Maddison netted a brace with goals from Pedro Porro and Brennan Johnson sealing a stunning win that inflicted a fifth straight defeat on Pep Guardiola‘s men.

It was the joint-heaviest home defeat of Guardiola’s career – and the first time he has ever lost five games in a row.

City are on the verge of a crisis after a difficult period that has seen them struggle for fitness and confidence. Things don’t get any easier with a huge title clash against Liverpool coming up next.

Walker in particular was guilty of some poor defending after being blitzed by Timo Werner for Tottenham’s fourth goal and decided to face up to the media following the defeat.

He told Sky Sports: “It’s hard to stand here and speak about it when I haven’t properly digested it yet. I’ve stood here when we won titles so I’ll stand here for defeats too.

“This is the most frustrating thing as a defender. I don’t care about scoring goals, I’m bothered about clean sheets and we’re not doing that. You have to go back to the basics and get a clean sheet. If we concede four goals at home we have to score five.”

Walker has warned City will be “walked over” by Liverpool if they repeat their performance against Spurs

Walker said City were not daunted by the challenge of facing Liverpool despite their barren run and insisted it would motivate them to raise their level. The Sky Blues are currently five points adrift of the league leaders but that could soon become eight if they beat Southampton.

Walker sent a rallying cry to his City team-mates, warning them that they would get “walked over” by Arne Slot’s men if they played like they did against Tottenham. Liverpool have been the most consistent team in the league this season, winning nine games, drawing one and losing one.

“We have one team above us doing really well,” he added. “We’ll keep fighting to the end as we always do. The best way to turn this round is on Tuesday. Hopefully the mojo comes back and we see the normal City from the past eight seasons.

“[Liverpool] is a great game to turn it around and take three points from the team who sit above you. But we can’t put in a performance like that or we’ll get walked over. We have a Champions League game to prepare for that massive game on Sunday and keep within touching distance of Liverpool.”
