Barcelona star Lamine Yamal has been told to follow in the footsteps of hero Lionel Messi and become the world ’s number one.
The Spanish winger is arguably one of the world’s most exciting youngsters since breaking through into the Catalan giants’ first team. Yamal, 17, has already made over 70 appearances for the club, scoring 13 goals.
He is in the midst of a sensational campaign having netted six times and provided 12 assists in all competitions. That form follows the youngster winning Euro 2024 with Spain.
Yamal has just 18 months left on his contract at the Camp Nou and it has been reported that Manchester City are keen to sign him. But his agent Jorge Mendes has assured that he will pen a new deal and has urged the youngster to to emulate both Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to become the best player in the world.
“He has to follow the good examples, such as Cristiano and Messi, who at almost 40 years old are still competing. He has the talent to be number one,” the Portuguese super agent said. “Lamine is a Barça player and will be for many years.”
Mendes also claimed that Yamal had been the best player in the world in 2024, but his tender years prevented him from scooping the big personal awards. He added: “Lamine Yamal has been the best, but he has also been a victim of his youth because many people who vote have thought that he is 17 years old and will have time to win these awards.”
And while Mendes has had plenty to say about his client, Yamal has also offered an update on his future. Speaking in an interview with Marca earlier this year, he confirmed that he was not thinking of an exit any time soon.

“No, I don’t really think about that. I only think about Barca, improving and winning titles here,” he said. “I dream of winning titles with Barca and that my family is doing well. Bringing back the Champions League is a dream to come true.”
Barcelona will certainly be hoping that Yamal can continue his hot form over the coming weeks. The Catalan giants take on Spanish minnows Barbastro in the Copa del Rey this weekend ahead of a Super Cup clash with Athletic Bilbao.
Their next league game pits them against Getafe next month. Barcelona currently sit third in the table and three points behind Atletico Madrid.
