Lando Norris has joked that he will follow Max Verstappen’s lead in trying to get out of attending F1’s launch event for the 2025 season.
To celebrate the 75th year of F1, the organisers are putting on an event at London’s O2 on February 18. All 10 teams and 20 drivers will be in attendance, with fans paying £58 to £113 for tickets to a two-hour event which promises the unveiling of the new libraries and “live music performances and other entertainment”.
And while F1 chief executive Stefano Domenicali has promised a brilliant event, his enthusiasm hasn’t been reciprocated by the stars of the show. Verstappen, who can wrap up another title win at Las Vegas this weekend, said “I hope I’m sick that week” when asked about the launch event while gaming last week and Norris has a similar opinion.
“If I get told to be there I guess I’ll be there. I might see where Max is going on holiday and join him,” Norris joked in the Las Vegas Grand Prix press conference. “It’s a cool event. I’m happy for everyone. I think it sold out extremely quickly.
“It’s cool for a lot of fans, it’s a big thing for Formula 1. I don’t know how it’s going to be done. I don’t know the layout of events but I’d rather be at home and relaxing and preparing for the season. That’s my side.
“I don’t like these types of things. I’m not a public person. I like to relax and do my things, but it’s also our job, so, at the end of the day, we can’t complain.”
Verstappen was even more damning when talking on a Call of Duty stream recently. “What is F1 75? What are you talking about?” he asked before adding: “I don’t watch any F1… I hope I’m sick that week.”

The Red Bull star has since tried to backtrack. “No, I was joking on the stream and then people always take it too seriously,” he said before toeing the party line much better. “I think it’s great for Formula 1 that all the cars are there with the liveries and it gets all announced.
“We are there as well so for me, no. I made a joke that I was hoping that I was sick and everyone thinks that I mean that is the case. Let’s see how it goes. It’s never been done before.”
The event is being planned by the same team which oversaw the opening and closing ceremonies at the first Las Vegas Grand Prix last year. It will take place a week before pre-season testing at the Bahrain International Circuit on February 26-28, while the season begins with the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne on March 16.
