Lando Norris fumed at “dangerous” Formula 1 title rival Max Verstappen as they resumed their furious wheel-to-wheel duel at the Mexican Grand Prix.

The title contenders sparked controversy with their battling antics last week in Austin. And it only took them a few racing laps to resume their dogfighting at the Mexico City race got under way.

After an early safety car period, Verstappen was in the lead having overtaken pole-sitter Carlos Sainz on the run to the first corner. But the Ferrari was soon back in the lead and then Norris was on the Dutchman’s tail.

But, after he was accused of running the McLaren man off the road in Texas last Sunday, he appeared to do so again as Norris tried the overtake. Then they both went off track while fighting for position seconds later, allowing Charles Leclerc to move past both.

Norris was upset with Verstappen’s conduct on track again and took to the radio to vent his frustrations. “This guy is dangerous,” he fumed. “It is the same as last time, mate. I will end up in a wall in a minute.”

Norris went on to tell his race engineer that Verstappen had “overtaken off the track and pushed me off”. And the stewards agreed that the Red Bull racer’s driving had not been fair as, moments later, confirmation came that he had been given a 10-second time penalty.

That punishment was given for forcing another driver, Norris, in this case, off the track. And soon after another 10-second penalty came for leaving the track and gaining an advantage after the Brit accused him of overtaking outside track limits.

When the news was relayed to Verstappen, he responded calmly – perhaps expecting the punishment to come along, especially after the complaints in Austin last weekend that he was not punished for the way he defended against Norris. “That is fine, then,” he replied, before adding: “That is so silly, man.”

Both Red Bull drivers picked up early penalties as Sergio Perez also had insult added to the injury caused by qualifying way down the order in 18th at his home race. The stewards found he had been too far ahead of his grid box and handed him a five-second penalty for the race start infringement.

And the Mexican also picked up damage while duelling with Liam Lawson, who is gunning for a promotion from sister team VCARB should Red Bull axe Perez. TV cameras showed a hole in the sidepod on the right side of his RB20 as a result of the contact.
