Bryson DeChambeau was welcomed back as a conquering hero at his alma mater Southern Methodist University.

The celebrated golfer brought with him the symbol of his triumph – the US Open trophy – to the university after securing his second major championship win at Pinehurst No.2 earlier this year. Overcoming Rory McIlroy in an electrifying final round in North Carolina cemented his status as a star.

Since clinching victory, the LIV Golf standout has been on a tour sharing his achievement, with Southern Methodist University being the latest stop. At Gerald J Ford Stadium, during the SMU Mustangs’ game against the Pittsburgh Panthers, DeChambeau made a grand entrance. He was chauffeured onto the field with the prestigious trophy held high, accompanied by two cheering supporters.

During the game, he didn’t just sit idly; he continued to showcase the silverware to adoring fans in the stands. The champ has not shied away from sharing the spotlight with the trophy and those who supported him since nailing that impressive win. He revelled in the post-win euphoria back in June at Pinehurst, engaging with spectators who got a chance to grip the coveted title.

Reflecting on his monumental victory, the golf sensation stressed the role of his supporters. In his heartfelt victory remarks, DeChambeau expressed profound gratitude: “I just can’t thank you guys enough for all the support this week. You guys have meant the world to me. You are the best fans in the world, and I can’t thank you enough. What a group of people.”

Extolling the influence of fans, he continued: “I mean, my mission is to continue to expand the game, grow the game globally, domestically. YouTube has really helped me accomplish some of that. Consequently, I think people have seen who I am on YouTube, which has been fantastic, cause then I get to play off of it.

“It just feeds itself out here. They just say things that make me interact and engage. When is the next junior club set coming out? Another video of the junior club set. I’m just able to play off of that. It’s direct conversations with people that truly engage with what I’m doing. It’s such an awesome, awesome platform for me to show who I truly am.

“Those fans out there really helped push me out there today. Even when stuff wasn’t going well, I’m just looking on the screen back there, I have nothing there, no business even trying to go for that. But you know me; I don’t play boring golf. Again, even though I hit it in the bunker, the fans are still chanting my name.

“So inspired me to get that one up-and-down… All I want to do is entertain and do my best for the game of golf, execute, and provide some awesome entertainment for the fans. From at least what I can tell, that’s what the fans want, and they deserve that.”

DeChambeau will be taking a three-month break from the LIV circuit but faces ‘The Showdown’ alongside Brooks Koepka against Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler in the coming weeks.
