Arsenal cult hero Lukas Podolski appears to have landed himself in hot water with German police.
The 2014 World Cup winner has enjoyed a storied career that has taken him from Koln, to Bayern Munich, Arsenal, Inter Milan, Galatasaray and Vissel Kobe to name just some of his clubs. At 39 and last winning one of is 130 caps in 2017, it’s safe to say his career is nearing its close however.
Podolski appears to have ackowledged as much, and despite still playing for Polish side Górnik Zabrze, featured in a farewell match for former side Koln, where he spent two spells. The testimonial in his hometown saw 50,000 flood to the RheinEnergieStadion to commemorate the veteran’s career.
It was during this celebration Podolski appears to have provoked the ire of officials. While the forward offered an emotional speech towards supporters and raised a scarf, he was also seen with a flare in hand in the stands.
German outlet Bild report that Cologne authorities are now investigating Podolski. Pyrotechnics are banned from being set off inside stadia in Germany and as a result he could face a fine and hearing.
Podolski has been slammed by a former police director, who is now the head of operations at the stadium. “Firstly, it is forbidden, secondly, he is a bad role model,” said Volker Lange.
“And thirdly: Someone who will take on responsibility at FC should be a role model – also in such points.”

After the game, Podolski paid tribute to the team. “It’s over on the pitch now, but we’ll definitely see each other again off the pitch – whether in the stands or on the road,” he said. “Once a Cologne fan, always a Cologne fan.”
“It really touches me that so many fans would like to come to enjoy this special evening with me. It is an honour for me to wear the Billygoat on my chest once more in front of a full house.
“It’s a final declaration of love for this special city, the club with its fantastic fans, my team-mates for so many years and other people who have accompanied my path.”
