Luke Littler has cast doubts over his ability to surpass Phil Taylor‘s impressive haul of World Darts Championship titles, saying: “I can’t see myself winning 16.”

Bursting onto the scene at Ally Pally almost a year ago, Littler has quickly climbed to world No. 4 and is now tipped as a favourite in every match he plays and competition he enters. Already boasting a Premier League and Grand Slam of Darts title, The Nuke’s burgeoning career will see the upcoming world championships watched with keen interest.

However, even with potential wins at Ally Pally and continued success, the young sensation believes that Taylor – who once dominated the sport as Littler wishes to do – and his record of 16 titles is perhaps one challenge too far.

“Yeah, people are going on. Been talking about Phil Taylor’s record of 16 world titles, and that is a lot to beat,” Littler told talkSPORT. “So if I’m in the game for long enough, maybe. But I can’t see myself winning 16.

“I want to win every major title once – tick everything off. So, the Premier League and Grand Slam of Darts are already ticked off in my first year. If you look back at darts a few years back, it was just looking at number one and number two. Now you can have a 100-ranked player beating the world’s best.

“It’s just that darts is so tough. Even when I lose a game, it’s all over, and it’s just like, he’s a professional, just like me,” Litter admitted. All year round, it’s been tough. When you’re playing well, you do back yourself to win most of the time, but like footballers, you have setbacks. With darts, there’s just so much going on, so if you lose a game, you can always bounce back.”

The debate as to whether Littler could surpass Taylor’s impressive set of titles was brought into the spotlight by Martin Lukeman, whom the 17-year-old defeated to claim his maiden Grand Slam crown, reports the Express.

“If he gets his head on, forget about Michael van Gerwen’s records. He’s going to beat Phil Taylor’s records,” the downed Lukeman admitted after the final.

Even Taylor himself weighed in on Littler’s potential to break his records, revealing to talkSPORT with a touch of reluctance: “I hope not.

“I’ll tell you what, though, if there’s anybody that could do it, it’s this young lad now. He’s got the age on his side, and he’s got the ability, so you never know, you never know.”
