Manchester United’s statement confirming the appointment of Ruben Amorim appears to point to a new direction, with the Portuguese taking the job title of head coach rather than manager,

Amorim, who will take over on November 11, has experience working alongside a sporting director. At current club Sporting Lisbon, that role has most recently been filled by Manchester City-bound Hugo Viana.

In contrast to the new boss, predecessor Erik ten Hag was announced as United’s manager – not head coach – when his appointment was confirmed in April 2022. The former Ajax man lasted two-and-a-half years in the job, but was dismissed on Monday off the back of a Premier League defeat at West Ham which left United 14th in the Premier League.

What this means for United’s approach, both on and off the pitch, remains to be seen. Ten Hag had a very visible say in the club’s transfer policy, securing reunions with a number of players who worked under him in Amsterdam, and the January window could provide a first opportunity to see Amorim – their first ever boss given the ‘head coach’ moniker – mould his squad.

United moved quickly to secure Amorim after dismissing Ten Hag. The club sent a delegation to Portugal to speak to Sporting’s representatives, and quickly indicated they were prepared to meet Amorim’s release clause with the Lisbon club.

Negotiations over moves for the former Braga boss’ coaching staff had appeared to hold up the move. United are expected to confirm the other staff appointments closer to the new man’s start date of November 11.

Ruud van Nistelrooy will continue as United’s interim manager until Amorim takes over at the start of the international break. The Dutchman won his first game in charge, against Leicester City in the Carabao Cup, and will take charge of three more games before handing over the reins.

Amorim will arrive at Old Trafford in the midst of a flying season for Sporting, who he led to the Primeira Liga title last season. They have won their first nine games of the season, scoring 30 goals and conceding just two, and are unbeaten in the Champions League.

He will join a club which finished eighth in the Premier League last term, and which is struggling this season. United go into Sunday’s game at home to Chelsea some six points behind their opponents, and 12 adrift of league leaders Manchester City after just nine matches.

Manchester United is delighted to announce the appointment of Ruben Amorim as Head Coach of the men’s first team, subject to work visa requirements,” United’s official statement read. “He will join until June 2027 with a club option of an additional year, once he has fulfilled his obligations to his current club. He will join Manchester United on Monday 11 November.

“Ruben is one of the most exciting and highly rated young coaches in European football. Highly decorated as both a player and coach, his titles include winning the Primeira Liga twice in Portugal with Sporting CP; the first of which was the club’s first title in 19 years. Ruud van Nistelrooy will continue to take charge of the team until Ruben joins.”
