Manchester United staff were left frustrated by Erik ten Hag and his use of the club’s academy – despite the sacked Dutchman being praised for the development of young talents like Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo.
Ten Hag was dismissed on Monday following a 2-1 loss to West Ham on Sunday, a result that leaves United scrambling in the bottom half of the Premier League table. The ex-Ajax chief leaves a mixed legacy at the club, having won the Carabao Cup and FA Cup in his two full seasons at the helm, but badly struggling in the league over the last 15 months.
And a club insider has claimed that Ten Hag was ‘never brave enough’ to give younger players a chance in the first team when it seemed an obvious choice. The decision to overlook promising player Harry Amass this season, despite his impressive pre-season tour in the United States and the absence of both Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, has, it’s claimed, raised eyebrows.
Further questions were asked when Toby Collyer started as left-back in the victory over Barnsley in the Carabao Cup at Old Trafford, and Bruno Fernandes, who appeared in need of a rest, was brought on with 30 minutes remaining while Ethan Wheatley sat unused on the bench.
There’s a sense among some academy coaches that Ten Hag only attended youth games when it was beneficial for his public image, reports the Manchester Evening News.
The recent installation of a training wall at United’s Carrington complex has reportedly fostered feelings of division too. The wall, erected to ensure privacy for the men’s first team, came into existence as Ten Hag desired more secrecy during tactical preparations ahead of Sunday matches. The decision was approved by Ineos shortly before his dismissal.

WHO WILL BE NEXT? Manchester United manager decided after four names put forward
Despite this, Ten Hag’s work with young players like Mainoo and Garnacho, now representing England and Argentina respectively, was viewed favourably by Ineos in their end-of-season review. During his tenure, Ten Hag handed debuts to Mainoo, Wheatley, Charlie McNeill, Dan Gore, Willy Kambwala and Omari Forson.
Wheatley even made history as the 250th academy player to debut for United’s senior team in a Premier League match last April. Additionally, young players were often included in first-team training sessions when extra bodies were needed, although this was usually due to the absence of senior players.
