Mike Tyson has said his popularity is the main reason why he’s taking on YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul.

It’s been nearly two decades since the former undisputed heavyweight world champion stepped in the ring; on that night, back in 2005, he suffered defeat by Kevin McBride. After the contest, ‘Iron Mike’ retired and delivered an emotional post-fight interview – which has since resurfaced online ahead of his clash with ‘The Problem Child’.

While he did step foot in the ring four years ago in an exhibition showdown with boxing legend Roy Jones Jr, there are many who have feared for Tyson’s health ahead of the clash with Paul – who is 31 years younger than his opponent. Those concerns were heightened after the 58-year-old was forced to pull out of the original contest after suffering an ulcer flare up. He was advised by his doctors to stop training, but has recently returned to the gym.

Both Paul and Tyson are scheduled to go head-to-head on November 15 at the AT&T Arena in Arlington, Texas. ‘The Problem Child’ comes into the encounter on the back of a knockout win over Mike Perry back in July. With a record of 10-1, Paul’s only defeat in the sport came against Tommy Fury last year.

With the event set to be broadcasted live on popular streaming service Netflix, millions are expected to watch from around the globe. More than 80,000 fans are expected to attend the blockbuster showdown between the pair. The fact that Tyson has played a part in these ticket sales is the main reason why he’s fighting the 27-year-old. In a recent interview with talkSPORT, when asked why he’s fighting now, ‘Iron Mike’ said: “58. I’m going to fight in the biggest arena ever and it’s going to be sold out, and who else can do that”?

He was then asked what it means to sell out such a big stadium in the States. “It makes me feel like I have to perform. They’re giving me all that inspiration and letting me know that ‘boy, you’ve got to perform tonight’. It’s time to perform”.

In the same interview, the 58-year-old addressed concerns for his health seeing that the fight is around the corner. “Everything is sorted out”, he said. “I had an ulcer problem. I was eating bad food”. The American was then quizzed whether he’ll be ready for November 15, with ‘Iron Mike’ replying: “Thank god”.

His comments came following a chat with Mail Online, with Tyson revealing his diet was to blame for his previous health issues. “I was doing too much bad food and stuff, and I got sick,” he said. However, he has said he’s now avoiding ‘processed foods’ and is ‘eating clean’ for the clash with the young American.
