Liverpool find themselves in an arduous position with both talisman Mohamed Salah and defensive stalwart Virgil van Dijk’s contracts up in 2025.

How this situation came to be is now immaterial, but Arne Slot’s side have, for one reason or another, allowed two of their brightest, but perhaps dimming, lights, alongside another pivotal piece, Trent Alexander-Arnold, to enter the final year of their current deals.

While it is widely considered that Alexander-Arnold, due to being much younger – aged 26 compared to Salah (32) and Van Dijk (33) – will be prioritised should he wish to stay, the debate is open as to who else should be handed a new deal.

Despite Slot’s brilliant start, contractual worries made all too real by Salah admitting earlier in the term that this would be his “last year with the club” have dampened things. With no resolution in sight yet, Mirror Football takes a look at what Reds pundits believe the club will or should do.

Graeme Souness

Former Liverpool player and manager Souness is firmly on the side of extending Van Dijk, believing the Dutchman’s quality is far too valuable to let go.

“Would it surprise me if Virgil stayed? No,” Souness told the Daily Mail. “He is the one of the three I think is most likely to remain. He is an absolute Rolls Royce who looks like he is playing without even getting into fourth gear.”

Souness also admitted, that in his opinion, it is likely Salah will depart in 2025, with the temptation of a big-money offer from the Saudi Pro League too difficult to turn down.

“Would it surprise me if Salah stayed? Slightly. Because I think there would be huge appeal to him, as an Egyptian and a Muslim, in earning astronomical money for the next three or four years in Saudi Arabia, the cradle of Islam and a country which has a maritime border with his own.”

Jamie Carragher

Long-time Reds defender Carragher, conversely, believes that Salah will be the one to extend. As well as stating that Alexander-Arnold will be prioritised, the 46-year-old believes that breaking records in the Premier League will entice the Egyptian to stay.

“He’ll have an eye on Thierry Henry (175 goals) and Frank Lampard (177 goals) by the end of this season, I would imagine, and I think stats like this are one of the biggest reasons why Mo Salah will sign a new contract at Liverpool,” Carragher told Sky Sports.

However, the man who played over 700 times for the Reds also offered some insight into Van Dijk’s future, revealing that he feels both of the pair should, in an ideal world, be re-signed.

“He’s [Van Dijk] a Liverpool legend, one of the greatest players the club’s ever had,“ Carragher added. “So I think it’s vitally important for the success of the new Arne Slot Liverpool that he’s here for the next couple of years.“

Daniel Sturridge

Sturridge, like his former team-mate Carragher, insists that the Premier League records within Salah’s grasp will prove too much of a temptation not to renew his deal at Anfield.

“So looking at Thierry [Henry] and those types of guys, players idolised as well, I do believe he’s got an eye on them,” Sturridge stated on Sky Sports.

“He’s thinking ‘you know what? If I can go down as having more goals than someone like Thierry Henry. I mean, come on, man, then we can look at him like the GOAT.”

Glen Johnson

Former Reds defender Johnson disagrees, opting instead for Van Dijk, as he feels that finding another top centre-half to replace him would be near impossible.

“It’s a tough one as they’re all such good players, but if I could keep just one, I’d probably keep Virgil van Dijk,” Johnson admitted to Betfred.

”Those top centre-backs are so hard to come by,” he added. “I wouldn’t want to lose any of them, but if I had to keep one, it would be Van Dijk.”

Phil Thompson

Thompson, a former defender on Merseyside who played nearly 400 times for the club, agrees with Johnson that Van Dijk should be prioritised, but for a very different reason.

“We [Liverpool] have made a good start [to the season], and people are talking about how well we have played, but then it’s, ‘Trent has not signed, Virgil has not signed, Mo has not signed’,” Thompson stated on talkSPORT.

“If we can get our captain [Van Dijk] to sign a contract, it may be that it kickstarts the other two into doing likewise,” he added, hopeful that the club could seal deals for each of their expiring trio.

Ian Wright

Aside from pundits who formerly played for the club, Wright, much like Carragher and Sturridge, chose to angle his decision on records, becoming another who feels as though Salah will be the one who signs a new deal.

Wright is another who thinks records will persuade Salah to re-sign

“I do get the impression that he will probably like to stay at Liverpool and break records,” Wright stated. “He has got that legacy to play for.

“Let’s say he stays for three years. Even if he dropped off in the last year, that’s 10 years of unbelievable Liverpool service. I believe that he will probably stay if Liverpool go about it.”

Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer

Punditry pair Lineker and Shearer were very clear when heading in an opposite direction to Souness, Johnson, Thompson and Wright on the matter.

“Trent’s been heavily linked with Real Madrid. It’s hard to turn down Real Madrid, to be honest. But I’d also have to side with Mo because I’m a striker,” Lineker stated on the Rest Is Football podcast.

“Irreplaceable,” Lineker continued. “But they’re all brilliant, they’re all absolutely great players, and they’ve been superb for Liverpool for a long time.”

Shearer uttered in agreement, the former England forward also siding with Salah: “Me too, only because of that fact it’s harder to find goalscorers.”
