Mike Williams of the New York Jets has spoken out after Aaron Rodgers singled him out for a blunder in their defeat to the Buffalo Bills, following a critical interception in the last quarter.

The Jets were on the brink of a victory in the match against the Bills, progressing upfield when Rodgers launched the ball downfield to Williams on a go-route. However, instead of sticking to the sideline go-route, Williams veered inside, prompting Rodgers to alter his pass and consequently allowing cornerback Taron Johnson the chance to intercept, effectively sealing the game’s outcome.

Post-match, Rodgers pointed the finger squarely at the seasoned wideout, articulating that Williams ought to have stuck to the sideline (redline), but instead cut his route toward the field’s centre.

Rodgers briefed journalists: “We [were supposed to have] two verticals. Allen’s [Lazard] down the seam, Mike’s [Williams] down the red line [sideline go-route]. I’m looking at Allen, he puts his hand up, three guys go with him. So, I’m throwing a no-look to the red line. When I peek my eyes back there [Williams] is running an in-breaker. It’s gotta be down the red line.”

Addressing the media for the first time since the faux pas, Williams was questioned about his feelings towards Rodgers’ public criticism of his route error, to which the veteran receiver replied: “No, nope. I’ve just got to be on the red line. We all watched film. We all go through it and made corrections.”

Fans were quick to express their anger at Williams, who joined the team on a one-year deal after leaving the Los Angeles Chargers. Many called for him to be traded as he has not lived up to his price tag since joining the team, with just 145 yards in six games and no touchdowns.

Williams was already the third or fourth option receiver before this incident. The Jets made a significant trade less than 24 hours after their loss, bringing in Rodgers’ all-time favourite option, Davante Adams, from their time together at the Green Bay Packers.

Shortly after this trade was confirmed, it was reported that Williams had become available for trade, finding himself in a crowded room alongside Adams, Garrett Wilson and Allen Lazard.
