Eddie Howe’s right-hand man Jason Tindall was shown a red card during the half-time interval of Newcastle’s match against Aston Villa after a confrontation with Unai Emery.
The Magpies coach has built a reputation for drawing the limelight beside Howe and has been no stranger to tense exchanges of words, though on this occasion the drama unfurled inside the tunnel at St James’ Park. Tindall and an Aston Villa analyst were unable to emerge for the second half on Boxing Day after being given their marching orders.
An angry exchange between both sets of coaching staff occurred after Anthony Taylor’s half-time whistle with tension heightened after Jhon Duran was sent off with Newcastle already leading 1-0 thanks to Anthony Gordon. Tindall is said to have clashed with Emery on more than one occasion during the match, even shushing him.
It appears when out of sight of the pitch Tindall went too far however. The former Bournemouth coach initially appeared in the press box during the second period before being escorted by security to his place in the stands.
Newcastle’s assistant and Emery have history, after the former was left irate when he appeared to be snubbed by the Spaniard last season. Despite his red it will be Tindall who finished the day happier than his rival.
Tindall was able to watch on as Alexander Isak and Joelinton secured Newcastle’s victory. The Magpies earned their third Premier League win in a row to move into fifth position. But he wasn’t allowed to celebrate with the team afterwards following his dismissal.

Newcastle’s sent off coach has previously admitted he does not shy away from conflict. “I don’t care if I upset people,” he said earlier this year.
“I’m not going to stop being me. It’s not deliberate. I won’t stop being me all of a sudden because of what people say about me and what they tell me to do.
“If anyone thinks that’s going to stop me being my real self, that’s not going to happen. Listen, I don’t mean to get under the skin of opposing managers or deliberately upset anyone. All I’m interested in doing is helping Newcastle win matches. Once kick-off is there, that’s my only motivation.
“My goal is to do everything in my power to help the team. If that upsets a few people along the way, then so be it.”
