Manchester United have sacked manager Erik ten Hag… and are moving for Ruben Amorim to replace him.

The Red Devils finally made the call to part ways with Ten Hag on Monday, following Sunday’s controversial 2-1 defeat away to West Ham. Having handed him a new contract in the summer when unable to find anyone better to take charge, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his board said enough was enough.

Ruud van Nistelrooy is taking temporary charge as interim manager, but the club are moving quickly to hire a permanent boss, with Amorim the No.1 choice. But he’ll need persuading to leave a red-hot Sporting Lisbon side mid-season – while the fact he’s Manchester City’s top pick to replace Pep Guardiola next summer – should he walk away – complicates matters too.

Scholes skeptical of Amorim

Paul Scholes isn’t convinced that Ruben Amorim is the best choice for Manchester United.

The ex-Red Devils midfielder would prefere Zinedine Zidane, telling the Premier League’s website: “Amorim is an interesting one. But, again, that is a risky one.

“We all know the style of play. [Amorim] plays really good football. We’ve been talking about him for City. that obviously tells you something about his pedigree.”

Scholes added: “This is one of the very biggest clubs in the world, so they should have the very best in class. Zidane is the one who has been at a major, major club and won major honours. But I am not sure how educated he is with the English language or whether he actually wants to come to England. You never get that feeling with him.”

ICYMI: What Amorim said on United links

Ruben Amorim faced the media just hours after Erik ten Hag was sacked yesterday.

Unsurprisingly, he was asked about the chances of him becoming Manchester United’s new manager.

The Sporting Lisbon boss said: “I was already expecting this question and obviously I’m not going to talk about the future, because otherwise I’ll always have to comment. I’m very proud to be Sporting coach, that’s all.”

Sporting Lisbon identify Amorim replacement

Ruben Amorim’s successor at Sporting Lisbon has reportedly already been decided.

Joao Pereira, the former Sporting and Portugal right-back, currently coaches their B team and according to Abola will succeed Amorim should he join Manchester United.

“I think he is an excellent coach, he has all the conditions to become Sporting’s coach,” Amorim said of Pereira in May.

Morning all

Welcome everyone!

Well Monday was certainly busy wasn’t it.

We’re back to keep you up to date with all the latest goings on at Old Trafford, with Ruben Amorim having emerged as the No.1 pick to replace Erik ten Hag.

But United know they need to move fast on this one.

That’s all from us

Well, its been quite the day in Manchester.

And Ten Hag’s successor might not be far away.

We’ll continue to bring you the latest tomorrow.

Can midseason sackings work?

Well the last time Man United opted for a change midway through a season they were struggling under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Ralf Rangnick came in and you could argue there was no change – they potentially got even worse.

Solskjaer himself came in midseason to replace Jose Mourinho in 2018/19. He certainly enjoyed his new manager bounce, but come the end of the year the reality set in and performances massively dipped.

It can work though – as Thomas Tuchel proved at Chelsea in 2021. So watch this space..

Ten Hag “asking to be sacked”

Erik ten Hag was “asking to be sacked” when he chose to use Noussair Mazraoui as his No.10 – just days before his Manchester United axe.

The Moroccan, signed in the summer from Bayern Munich as a full-back, was used as the team’s main playmaker during their draw with Fenerbahce in midweek. There had never been any indication that Mazraoui could double up and play in a central attacking role. As a result the decision bemused the majority who watched on with the 26-year-old unable to provide the attacking spark necessary in their 1-1 draw.

Ten Hag had struggled to get a tune out of his team in the final third and his use of Mazraoui did little to help his cause. In the Premier League the Manchester outfit are the second lowest scorers – only newly promoted Southampton have done worse in front of goal and Stephen Warnock claims those selection calls do little to inspire.

He said on Sky Sports: “I look at this guy and they [the players] are not looking at him, they’re not asking for information from him because it seems a bit ad hoc.

“I mean, Mazraoui playing in the 10 the other night, what is that all about? You’re asking to be sacked. You’re playing a left-back or right-back in the No.10 position. It’s bizarre. That’s losing control. That’s losing respect of the changing room.”

More on Amorim… who has AGREED to become the club’s next manager

Ruben Amorim has agreed in principle to take over as the next manager of Man Utd, according to the MEN.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has wasted no time in getting his man after sacking Erik ten Hag.

All that is left now is for Man Utd and Sporting Lisbon to agree a compensation package.

De Gea’s subtle dig?

David de Gea simply posted an emoji in the wake of Man United deciding to sack Erik ten Hag – offering a potential insight into his feelings.

The goalkeeper was among the players to be moved on by the Dutchman during his tenure with the club eventually allowing De Gea to leave on a free. He had spent more than a decade at Old Trafford before he left without having a new club lined up in 2023.

The Spaniard had just picked up the Golden Glove in the Premier League for having the most clean sheets, but was ushered out the door with Ten Hag wanting to sign Andre Onana from Inter Milan.

He felt as though the goalkeeper, whom he worked with at Ajax, could help United play a more possession-based game with the Cameroon international known for his distribution – something De Gea had struggled with.

Ten Hag has now been given the boot with the Manchester hierarchy deciding to sack him after their poor start to the season. Their loss at West Ham, which came after a last minute penalty, proved to be the Dutchman’s final game and he leaves the team in the bottom half.

De Gea tweeted what is often known as the Italian hand gesture. The two pinched fingers is often used in Italy to mean disagreement, frustration or disbelief. The goalkeeper now finds himself playing in Serie A with Fiorentina.

Neville’s big take revisited – is he wrong?

The ex-player turned opinionated pundit said in 2021…

“They won’t bring a hitman in again. A hitman who comes in and does a job for two years. Antonio Conte’s available but I wouldn’t bring him to Manchester United. I wouldn’t bring him here now, I wouldn’t. I don’t think Conte is a fit for Manchester United. I don’t think he’s a fit. We’ve seen a coach with a specific style like Louis van Gaal didn’t work here.”

History suggests he might be right after several failures. But if a manager wins elsewhere but not in Manchester – isn’t the club the problem, not the individual?

Thoughts?

Man Utd move for Amorim

Man United are ‘working on’ a deal for Ruben Amorim, it has been claimed.

United sacked Erik ten Hag on Monday after defeat at West Ham left the team down in 14th place in the Premier League. Ruud van Nistelrooy has been confirmed as interim manager ahead of the midweek Carabao Cup meeting with Leicester City.

Sporting boss Amorim was among the big names linked with the Liverpool job over the summer before the Reds moved for Arne Slot. He has also been heavily linked with Manchester City following the announcement that Sporting’s Hugo Viana will take over as City sporting director when Txiki Begiristain leaves the Etihad Stadium.

According to The Athletic, United are ready to pay Amorim’s £8.3m release clause to bring him to Old Trafford.

Questions asked over Ratcliffe’s summer call

Sir Jim Ratcliffe could really have done with nailing his first big decision. He didn’t.

It was he who opted to retain Erik ten Hag in the summer, when an FA Cup win covered up for a poor Premier League season. Many argued one game at Wembley shouldn’t out do a season of underperformance.

It was enough to keep Ten Hag in a job though. He then survived the recent international break but the recent loss was clearly too much.

Ratcliffe now has to get his next manager right or risk becoming an owner who talks the talk, but doesn’t walk the walk.

Amorim speaks out on replacing Ten Hag

He said: “I was already expecting this question and obviously I’m not going to talk about the future, because otherwise I’ll always have to comment. I’m very proud to be Sporting coach, that’s all.”

Sporting’s high-flying position is thought to be one of several reasons Amorim does not want to leave his current club mid-season with the prospect of adding more silverware on the table, reports the Independent.

Neville stunned by Ugarte use

Gary Neville admitted the Man Utd United bosses would’ve been asking questions over Erik ten Hag’s use of Manuel Ugarte – who was left on the bench on Sunday.

The Uruguayan watched on from the bench for the entire 90 minutes as West Ham secured a last minute win over the Red Devils. Casemiro and Christian Eriksen were given the nod from the start in midfield. Ugarte was chased throughout the summer by United with the idea being he would replace the likes of Casemiro, who is north of 30 and performed poorly last year.

The ex-PSG man though has struggled to have the desired impact, but equally hasn’t necessarily been given the run of games he’d like. Across the last three Premier League games he’d been given just two minutes and Neville was left bemused by one of Ten Hag’s final decisions.

He said on Sky Sports: “Yesterday I was shocked to see Eriksen and Casemiro in central midfield and Ugarte on the bench. Ugarte was brought in as the successor to Casemiro and it’s not started brilliantly for him, but I think things like that, if I was an owner looking at that I’d think ‘hang on a minute, these two in midfield are getting on in age, and you’ve got a lad that’s been brought in for 40 odd million quid who has got legs…’

“I would be asking questions about that as an owner. Lack of a style of play has been a big problem too. Lack of progression and performance levels, it’s a real struggle watching United play. That’s not changed in the past 18 months, and that in the end was as big a problem as the results.”

ICYMI: Fernandes’ thank-you message to Ten Hag

Bruno Fernandes via Instagram:

“Thanks for everything boss! I appreciate the trust and the moments we share together, I wish you all the best in the future. Even knowing the last period hasn’t been great from all of us I hope you fans can keep with you the good things the manager has done for our club!”

ICYMI: United’s stance on Solskjaer

A report from Manchester Evening News earlier today claimed that Manchester United haven’t ruled out making an approach for former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Due to the Red Devils’ tricky financial situation and Erik ten Hag’s expected £17million payoff, Solskjaer could be an option on an interim basis, as he’s a free agent and would likely return without demanding astronomical wages.

Frank speaks out on Ten Hag and job links

Thomas Frank has been speaking to the media today, with the Brentford boss reportedly on Manchester United’s shortlist.

“Of course, I feel for Erik. He is a great coach and has a great career. He did a good job at Man United, two trophies in two years,” Frank said when asked about Ten Hag’s sacking.

“It’s a non-stop developing world and that is more than acceptable. At these big clubs, there are massive expectations but there has to be a reality check… You feel for guys who lose their jobs and I’m sure Erik gave everything. There are better people to judge that (improvement). He had a very good first season and had more than a few injury problems.”

On the vacancy, Frank added: “I’ve got a big responsibility to Brentford Football Club, the fans, the leadership, players and staff. One focus, to beat Sheffield Wednesday in the Carabao Cup. I’m very happy here, one of the best clubs in the world. What happens in the future who knows, but I am very happy here.

“Right now I’m just here and enjoying life here. I always try to be as transparent as possible, I am very happy here and I can see myself being here for a long, long time in the future. I just want to focus on Sheffield Wednesday, get on with the game, try to win.”

Amorim breaks silence

Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim has just addressed speculation linking him to Manchester United in a press conference.

“I was already expecting this question and obviously I’m not going to talk about the future, because otherwise I’ll always have to comment,” Amorim told reporters. “I’m very proud to be Sporting coach, that’s all.”

United ‘not ruling out’ Solskjaer return

The Manchester Evening News report that Old Trafford chiefs haven’t ruled out a formal approach for ex-manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Red Devils could be restrictured to managerial free agents in their search, with Erik ten Hag due roughly £17million in compensation.

POLL: Have your say on Ten Hag’s sacking

Frank’s recent comments

Thomas Frank, who Manchester United are monitoring, recently addressed the topic of leaving Brentford for a bigger club.

“One thing is for sure if I ever leave Brentford, which will probably happen one day,” Frank told the Sports Agents.

“I’ll definitely go back to Denmark one day, I know that. Who knows what will happen in the future? We never know. As I said many times, and I think it’s very important, because I’m probably in one of the best clubs in the world. End of discussion.

“In terms of the alignment, the leadership, the culture – everything. So, why should I ever leave this place? But things can happen, you can want new inspiration or whatever it is, but maybe also find another inspiration here in the club and you stay for longer.

“But coming back to your question because I’m not going to talk around it, don’t worry, for sure if I ever got an offer from a big club and decided to go there, it probably wouldn’t make my life better. I think we all know that but hey, that’s maybe a challenge that you need to try, I don’t know. It’s not something I’m thinking about.”

Ten Hag’s final act

After yesterday’s defeat to West Ham, Erik ten Hag conducted a pre-match press conference looking ahead to Wednesday’s clash with Leicester City.

Needless to say, his quotes won’t hit hard if they ever emerge.

Ten Hag’s final message

Erik ten Hag believed that he’d be able to turn Manchester United’s season around.

“In this moment definitely the luck is not on our side,” Ten Hag bemoaned after losing to West Ham yesterday.

“It is not about me. Last season was not different but in the end we turned it around. We are so determined it will be the same again. We have to turn it around and we will.”
