Former Arsenal star Nicklas Bendtner was caught up in a horrific stabbing attack last week while visiting New York with friends.

A pal of the former Denmark striker was injured, with CCTV footage of the incident showing the moments just before the attack was carried out.

Bendtner, 36, had been walking down a street in Manhattan’s Upper West Side last Thursday with three other people when a man, wearing T-shirt and shorts, ran at them from behind while carrying a blade before running back in the direction he came from seconds later.

According to local media Joshua Zinberg, 25, was arrested on Friday and has been charged with attempted murder and assault. He was turned in by his own mother, according to reports.

And Bendtner, who 45 goals in 171 games across nine years at Arsenal, confirmed to Danish outlet Ekstra Bladet that he was in the CCTV footage: “Yes, I can confirm that it is me in the video.

“Could it have been me who was attacked? I have no comment about that. But I can confirm that it’s me on the video – it’s hard to run away from.”

The friend, a 55-year-old former professional footballer, suffered facial injuries and received treatment at New York’s Mount Sinai Hospital.

Mayor of New York Eric Adams said of the incident: “We walk past people every day that we know they do not have the ability to make the right decision to take care of themselves.

“This is a problem that was created when we closed the psychiatric facilities many years ago. We closed them without giving people the support that they deserve.”
