Paul Scholes believes Manchester United have not learned from their mistakes in appointing Ruben Amorim.
The Sporting Lisbon boss is on the verge of becoming the Red Devils’ new boss following the sacking of Erik ten Hag. United have already approached the Portuguese club and are keen to activate a €10m (£8.43m) release clause written into his contract.
Should a deal go through, he would become the tenth man to sit in the Old Trafford hotseat since the exit of Sir Alex Ferguson just over a decade ago. But United icon Scholes isn’t convinced that Amorim is the right man for the job.
He believes that he could potentially go the same way as his predecessor Ten Hag, while suggesting that former Chelsea and current England boss Thomas Tuchel should have been appointed instead.
Speaking on Sky Bet’s The Overlap, Scholes said: “I think Thomas Tuchel was the right one to coach Manchester United, but obviously he’s gone now with England. He’s someone that can manage an elite football club and win big games. He’s been there and done it.
“I agree on Rúben Amorim – it [the hype] feels a bit like Erik ten Hag [when he joined Manchester United], he’s coming from the Portuguese league which is a bit better than the Dutch league. What he’s done there has been good – he looks charismatic, and that he has a bit about him.
“I know he’s meant to sign in the coming days and hours, but Sporting play Manchester City next week, and Arsenal in the next three or four weeks – it might be a chance to give him a public interview, and see how he handles the media, see how his team plays.

“In England, we don’t watch a lot of Portuguese football, so we don’t know too much. We see them a bit in European football, and all the things we hear about him are good – exciting football, three at the back and possession based – something United don’t really do. If he comes in to do that, it could be exciting.”
Amorim will be aiming to start proving Scholes wrong this weekend should he be appointed by United over the coming days. While interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy will oversee Wednesday’s Carabao Cup clash with Leicester, Amorim could potentially take charge of the weekend’s clash with Chelsea.
And Amorim has already started planning for his time at Old Trafford. The Portuguese has already picked out his coaching team and will be joined by Daniel Fernandes, Adelio Candido and goalkeeper coach Jorge Vital at United.
