The Premier League had some more VAR calls to deal with on Monday night, with Manchester United and Chelsea at the centre of a pair of tight decisions, and an explanation has been arrived after the Blues had a goal chalked off.
United went behind inside four minutes at home to Newcastle as Alexander Isak opened the scoring from Lewis Hall’s cross. There was a tight offside call as the left-back received the ball before feeding Isak, but he was just onside.
Chelsea, meanwhile, trailed inside 10 minutes away to struggling Ipswich. They then had a goal of their own ruled out for offside, with Joao Felix’s celebrations cut short.
“Felix’s goal was initially awarded on-field,” a statement from the Premier League Match Centre read.. “VAR checked and determined that he was in an offside position and recommended that the goal was disallowed.
Ipswich’s opener came from the penalty spot, with Liam Delap converting after going to ground under Filip Jorgensen’s challenge. “The referee’s call of penalty for a foul by Jörgensen on Delap was checked and confirmed by VAR, who deemed there was sufficient contact for a penalty,” the league statement read.
Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson was on punditry duty on BBC Radio 5 Live and suggested Felix should have been able to stay onside. “Joao Felix shouldn’t be offside because he is looking across the line,” he said.
“It’s a beautiful ball by Cole Palmer and a lovely finish but he is offside. The length of time the decision has taken tells you how close it is.”

The early drama at Old Trafford was quickly followed by a second Newcastle goal. It was Joelinton who doubled the Magpies’ lead as Eddie Howe’s side laid siege to the Manchester United goal.
Former United captain Gary Neville was on co-commentary duty for the game and didn’t mince his words. “”Newcastle are hammering Manchester United. This is a mauling,” Neville said.
There was one more game in the Premier League on Monday night, and that didn’t escape VAR drama itself. Aston VIlla had a penalty award checked in their match against Brighton, and that was awarded after initially being missed, with Ollie Watkins scoring from the spot to make it 1-1 on the night.
“The referee’s call of no penalty to Aston Villa was checked by VAR, who deemed that there was sufficient contact by Pedro on Rogers for a penalty and recommended an on-field review,” the Premier League Match Centre account explained. “The referee overturned the original decision and awarded a penalty.”
