Reece James will receive mental support from Chelsea after he was hit with another injury setback.

The versatile defender is not expected back before the end of December after a scan was done on his hamstring, but the club do not want to put any timescale on James’ return as they’re aware of the struggles he’s experienced whilst being sidelined.

Chelsea have not confirmed the outcome of the latest scan, but the Telegraph reports that James may not return until the New Year, depending on how his recovery goes. His latest setback is not viewed as a recurrence of a previous injury, reports the Telegraph.

Whilst the Blues will offer James with the best possible rehabilitation programme they also want to ease the mental load they put on the 24-year-old, who has only played 654 minutes of football since being named Chelsea captain 15 months ago. That time period has seen him miss 55 games.

James is thought to be devastated by his latest setback and previously opened up on his mental struggles: “Since this injury I’ve had a good amount of support but significantly more hate and negativity. Believe me I don’t wanna be injured, I’m happiest when I’m playing football. Thanks to the understanding people that support me despite the highs or the lows, it goes a long way.”

Enzo Maresca, despite being understanding of James’ situation, did publicly call on the Chelsea captain to step up and provide more leadership.

“He’s progressing but I expect more,” said the Italian back in October. “Most of the time, a player thinks that ‘because I am captain I expect that you [the manager] give me more’. No, for me because you are the captain you have to give more. You have to give more than the rest.

Following his latest injury last week James said on social media that said: “This message is to the people that understand and have respect for what I’m going through… I appreciate you so much, your support and kind words go further than you could ever imagine.

“And just to touch on me… I’m doing OK, been better and also been worse. Another challenge ahead accepted. Eventually I’ll come out on top. Against all odds. Lastly, I’d like to touch on the festive period coming, these times are tough for everyone! I wish you all a happy and peaceful festive season.”

Chelsea play nine games in December, which begins when they host Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday.
