Ruben Amorim has barely been in the door five minutes and he’s already blowing people away at Manchester United.
The former Sporting CP coach will take charge of his first Red Devils match this Sunday when United travel to Portman Road to face Ipswich Town. Over the past week or so, he’s been whipping his new squad into shape amid speculation a change in formation to a back three could be on the cards.
Due to the international break, Amorim has hardly trained with the bulk of United’s top stars. But one thing immediately stood out when they returned to Carrington on Thursday.
According to The Independent, the players have been struck by the “clarity” with which Amorim speaks, as well as his dedication to ensuring they fully grasp his instructions, down to the smallest detail. They’ve also been impressed by his willingness to immerse himself in drills and his hands-on approach to training.
This shouldn’t come as a surprise. Amorim has a reputation for meticulousness but also believes that if he can’t explain a particular idea in a single sentence, it shouldn’t be communicated until it’s simplified. In fact, it’s understood that he’s banned his coaches from giving out complicated instructions altogether.
At Sporting, the 39-year-old typically used either a 3-4-2-1 or a 3-4-3 formation, and he’s been drilling his new players on a three-at-the-back system since he arrived. Given that throughout Erik ten Hag’s reign, 4-2-3-1 was the preferred formation, it might take the squad a little time to adjust.
There are also concerns that United don’t quite have the personnel to master a three-at-the-back system, especially given the distinct lack of wing-backs in the squad. Activity is expected in the January transfer window, although club bosses are keen for Amorim to get the best out of the current crop of players before sanctioning another major splurge.

The Red Devils started the weekend 13th in the Premier League table, having won just four of their opening 11 matches. Ipswich, who are managed by former United assistant Kieran McKenna, have just one win on the board so far – a 2-1 victory over Tottenham just before the international break.
Given United’s precarious position – seven points above the relegation zone – hitting the ground running will be imperative for Amorim. He won’t have long to win over the fans, who at this point are running low on ‘trust the process’ energy. That said, if the positive atmosphere at Carrington is anything to go by, he won’t need long, either.
