New Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has labelled Roy Keane ‘the real star’ in a dig at Ed Sheeran after the musician gatecrashed his first post-match interview.
Speaking to Sky Sports following United’s frustrating 1-1 draw away to Ipswich Town, Amorim was interrupted when Ipswich fan and minority owner Sheeran came over and hugged pundit Jamie Redknapp. Awkwardly looking down at the floor, Amorim waited for Sheeran to leave the pitch-side studio before continuing with his interview.
Sheeran, 33, was slammed by United fans on social media and later apologised for interrupting. Amorim has now spoken for the first time since the incident and chose to hail United legend Keane, who was also part of Sky’s punditry team at Portman Road.
“In Portugal it is so different,” Amorim said on the eve of United’s Europa League clash with Bodo/Glimt. “He was just saying hello to one of the commentators and it was nothing. I was with Roy Keane and he is the real star in that panel. It was nothing, it’s okay.”
Four-time Grammy award winner Sheeran had issued an apology on Instagram by saying: “Apologies if I offended Amorim yesterday, didn’t actually realise he was being interviewed at the time, was popping in to say hi and bye to Jamie. [Obviously] feel a bit of a b****** but life goes on. Great game though, congrats on all involved x.”
Amorim and Co. will be hoping to put the Ipswich draw behind them by marking the Portuguese’s first home game in charge with a victory. The Red Devils have only won one of their opening four games in Europe this season and Amorim is desperate to pick up all three points against the Norwegian champions.

“It will be a special time. I just want to win the game,” the 39-year-old affirmed. “Before the match it will be like a new sensation. After the whistle, it will just be another game. We have a lot of games and we are in the beginning of something. We will try to win every game, not just focus on this game and have a clear of idea of how to play.
“I am expecting a tough game. They run a lot and we need to improve that. They have some special players in the wings. They are winning all the time so I am expecting a very, very intense game and a good game. It will be a good game.”
