Ruben Amorim has been urged to restore Harry Maguire to the captaincy as his Manchester United reign continues to falter.
The Red Devils have lost their last four games in all competitions, conceding 11 goals in the process. One of those defeats was to struggling Wolves, during which skipper Bruno Fernandes was sent off after picking up two yellow cards.
It was the third time the midfielder has picked up a red card this season and has led to fresh scrutiny on his position as captain. Lisandro Martinez was handed the armband for the defeat to Newcastle in Fernandes’ absence.
But former skipper Maguire was also in the line-up and Amorim has now been told to give the Englishman a second chance. Amorim has confirmed the 12-month extension clause in the defender’s contract will be activated.
That news has led to former United star Patrice Evra to call for Maguire to be restored to the captaincy. The Fenchman said: “Give him the armband back!!!! After all he been through showing resilience and leadership.”
Maguire was made captain in 2019 and held the role for four years before being stripped of the job by Erik ten Hag. His current deal expires at the end of the season, but Amorim has confirmed he will be staying at Old Trafford.
” Harry Maguire we’re going to trigger our option. I spoke with him this morning and I told him he has to improve his game on the pitch. We need him a lot and also he needs to improve as a leader,” he said.

“We all know the situation that he had here but we need him a lot in this moment so we are going to trigger happily the option for Harry. There are moments in the career of a player that are different.
“I think he coped very well with these struggles. When you look at our team we are starving for leaders on the pitch. He is a leader, he has to improve that part, he has to improve his game so we are happy to continue with Harry.”
Amorim admitted he was frustrated with Fernandes for his sending off against Wolves. The 30-year-old will return for Sunday’s trip to Premier League leaders Liverpool and should take back the armband.
“I am always frustrated with the red card, but it can happen as he always want to go for the ball. It is not like he wants to stop the player with a yellow. He wanted to go for the ball, the guy got there first and there is a contact and that thing is tough on him also,” Amorim said.
“They need time to change as they are changing completely and the way of playing is hard on them and it is also hard on the staff as well to pass all the information on. Then when you do not get the results that is even harder. We have to believe and we have to continue.”
