Ruben Amorim claimed Marcus Rashford’s return was down to “selection” reasons after finally opting to end his exile.

The Manchester United academy graduate has endured a rocky few weeks under his new manager. Rashford, 27, had been left out of the Red Devils’ last three Premier League squads.

But he was pictured arriving at Old Trafford a few hours before Monday’s clash with Newcastle. And it was eventually revealed that the forward had been handed a place on the bench, with a front three of Rasmus Hojlund, Amad and Joshua Zirkzee starting the game.

And Amorim briefly explained why he had opted to recall Rashford. Speaking to Sky Sports, the Portuguese coach said: “Selection. We have a lot of players outside. Every week I chose my players and this time he is here.”

Amorim has never opened up on what the specifics were behind Rashford’s exile. The striker was axed from United’s squad for the Manchester derby earlier this month.

And Amorim gave a somewhat familiar reason behind his thinking. Speaking at the time, he said: “Selection. We try to evaluate everything – training, performance, game performance, engagement with the teammates, push the teammates up.

“Everything is on the line when we analyse and try to choose the players, so it was my selection. Simple. I don’t want to send a message (to the dressing room with this). It’s simply an evaluation, and they know it.

“The players are really, really smart and so everybody understands my decision and I have to choose. It’s just a simple selection. Of course the context is difficult – we have to win games and we have a difficult situation now.

“But, like I said, I pay attention to everything – the way you eat, the way you put on your clothes to go the game. Everything. I make my evaluation and then I have to decide. I have a lot of players to choose (from) and today I did my choice.”

Despite being left out for the past few weeks, Rashford has still been handed a number of opportunities this season. He has made 24 appearances in all competitions for the Red Devils – scoring on seven occasions and providing three assists.

Following the clash with Newcastle, Rashford will hope that his next opportunity to appear comes in the Red Devils’ next game. They are in action at the weekend by taking on fierce rivals Liverpool at Anfield.
