Sean Dyche has revealed that Ashley Young “ripped his neck” after Chelsea on Sunday and now faces some time on the sidelines.
Everton were able to hold the Premier League title challengers to a draw at Goodison Park, who endured a frustrating afternoon at Goodison Park. Young started the match at right-back but was later hooked by Dyche in the 73rd minute just moments after he attempted a header.
He will now miss Everton’s Boxing Day clash against Man City, although the 39-year-old was already ruled out of the match through suspension having picked up his fifth yellow card against Chelsea – but alongside that he’s now nursing an injury.
Young required treatment after being replaced by Seamus Coleman and Dyche said: “Youngy is suspended anyway but he ripped his neck when he did a brilliant header at the far stick. We had to take him off for both reasons – to make sure he was OK physically and was on a yellow card.”
The extent of Young’s injury may determine whether or not he is able to play against his son Tyler when Everton take on Peterborough United in the third round of the FA Cup on January 9. Young is eager to take on his 18-year-old son, who is making his way at London Road.
Young’s career has seen him play for the likes of Watford, Aston Villa, Manchester United and Inter Milan before ending up at Everton. He’s now nearing his 40th birthday but remains a regular for the Toffees
The Everton star has opened up on his decision to remain playing and will stay devoted to the game until his body makes it obvious that he can’t play on, but Young claims he’s feeling incredible fit despite the clock winding down on his playing days.
He said: “I’m just taking every season as it comes until my body tells me that I can’t do it anymore. Then I think that’s the day when I’ll hang up my boots. But it could be a few years yet for me I’m still feeling as fit as I have done in years.”
Everton this week saw The Friedkin Group (TFG) finalised its majority takeover of the club in a deal which is believed to be worth in excess of £400m. Roundhouse Capital Holdings Limited, which is an entity within The Friedkin Group, have bought Farhad Moshiri’s 94.1 per cent stake in the club.
