Ruben Amorim received huge applause from the Sporting Lisbon crowd ahead of what could be his last match in charge.
The Portuguese manager is heavily linked with the Manchester United vacancy and the Premier League club are in talks with his current employers about a move. The Red Devils are prepared to pay Amorim’s release clause as they seek a replacement for Erik ten Hag, who was sacked on Monday.
Amorim has been a huge success in Lisbon – guiding the club to their first Primeira League title in 19 years in 2021. He’s since claimed another league success and added two domestic cups.
Those achievements have endeared him to the club’s fans, who gave him a warm welcome as the majority of the crowd at the Jose Alvalade Stadium stood up to applaud as their manager wandered out towards the home dugout.
Sporting played Nacional in the quarter-finals of the Taca de Liga Cup on Tuesday night and Amorim was quizzed on the Manchester vacancy just 24 hours earlier – giving little away.
He said: “I was expecting that question and obviously I am not going to talk about my future. I am not going to speak about my future because no matter what I say I’d have to always talk about it. Since the first day, I said it was not worthy to ask about it and I am not going to make any comments about my future.”
Amorim has previously been linked with a move to the Premier League. Earlier in 2024 he held talks with West Ham when they sought a new manager and later apologised to the club’s fans for doing so, citing it as a “mistake”.

Sporting have already communicated the fact that Amorim has a release clause which the Premier League club are happy to pay with Amorim keen on the opportunity to succeed Ten Hag.
A statement from the Portuguese club read: “Manchester United FC expressed interest in hiring coach Rúben Amorim, with the Board of Directors of Sporting SAD referring to the terms and conditions set out in the employment contract in force between the Company and the coach, specifically for the respective termination clause and for the amount of Euro 10,000,000.00. Manchester United FC expressed interest in paying Sporting SAD the value of the aforementioned clause.”
Reports in Portugal suggest Amorim, along with three assistant coaches, are due to make the move to Manchester, with the head coach expected to sign a two-and-a-half-year contract.
