New England manager Thomas Tuchel has suffered a blow, with longtime ally Zsolt Low not set to join his Three Lions coaching staff.
Tuchel was announced as England boss earlier this month, with the German succeeding Gareth Southgate after he stood down as manager following Euro 2024. It has been announced that Anthony Barry will be Tuchel’s assistant, having worked with him at Chelsea and Bayern Munich, but the rest of his staff is yet to be confirmed.
“There will be a few more people in the backroom staff but we will keep the group very small because I always want to acknowledge the potential and the quality in the staff of the FA,” Tuchel said.
“We want to work together and we want to be open but it is important to have a streamlined process, people at your side who watch the game and the behaviour, the patterns through your lens. Anthony is the key figure in that, as my assistant coach. We work now for the third time together and I’m very happy to have him at my side.”
However, according to Hungarian outlet m4sport.hu, Low will not be linking up with Tuchel once again as he aims to pursue his ‘own path in football’. The former Hungary international played alongside Tuchel for Mainz and worked as his assistant at Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Bayern.
“There was chemistry between us even when I was a player at Mainz in 2009,” Low told club media after joining Tuchel’s coaching staff at Bayern. “We’re on the same wavelength. We’ve been working closely together since Paris.
“I appreciate how he involves me, with the training planning, match planning, leading training, tactics. We make a lot of decisions together and work as a team. We spend more than 300 days a year together – more time than with our families. A friendship has developed between us.”

Tuchel has signed an 18-month deal which will run until the 2026 World Cup and he is hoping to “put a second star on the shirt” by winning the tournament. “It suited my passion to push this group of players and to be part of this federation which has such a strong record in recent tournaments and push it over the line and to try and put a second star on the shirt,” he said.
“Now I have to live up to it, of course, and I know that there are some trophies missing in the Federation! And of course I want to help to make it happen. I think first of all, they are there. We are there.
“The group of players proved that they are there. The consistency of quarter-final, semi-final, finals is impressive. Lost each of them when it was very, very close. The genuine belief is that we are there, that we are ready.”
