The countdown to Christmas is on but Premier League managers will be waiting for their presents to arrive little over one week later.

The January transfer window opens in just 12 days and there is no shortage of business to be conducted. For the moment, Marcus Rashford’s future is catching the headlines.

The Manchester United forward wants to leave Old Trafford and the club are happy to facilitate his exit in January or beyond. Ruben Amorim has suggested he would like to retain the 27-year-old’s services and already it has become apparent that suitors may have trouble financing a deal. United’s new boss also may want some players of his own to arrive next month.

Liverpool meanwhile could see Mo Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold open talks with other clubs. The trio are set to enter the final six months of their contracts, and Real Madrid are said to be increasingly confident of landing the latter.

Chelsea are flying high and could mount a serious title challenge but exits are more likely at Stamford Bridge. Ben Chilwell and Carney Chukwuemeka may hope for new destinations to earn playing time.

Arsenal are seeing no shortage of links to a new forward, and Manchester City could yet eye someone to fill the giant hole left by Rodri after a disastrous run of form.

With new managers at Southampton and Wolves, there is set to be transfer activity throughout the table.

Guardiola transfer verdict

Man City usually avoid conducting business in January but the club’s current predicament has ensured it has not been ruled out for 2025. Pep Guardiola has conceded discussions have taken place but he remains cautious.

“It is not easy to do that. Teams don’t sell, maybe it has to be players who don’t play. They don’t want to sell and they are so expensive,” he said.

“It depends on the market and we’ll see. It’s simple: get players back. Except Rodri. We have the squad there and after that maybe we’ll have the team that we were. We were not able to solve it.

“We’ve spoken about doing something and if it’s in winter it’s if we can really we need it or if we can really find something. Not for just four or five months. In the winter it is more difficult to do. We’ll see.”

Dele exit

Dele’s Everton exit was driven by his desire to push himself as he attempts to revive his career. The 28-year-old announced his departure on Friday after a difficult 18 months.

Despite becoming a free agent in the summer he continued to train with the Toffees.

Asked whether he believed Dele could resurrect his career, Sean Dyche said: “Hopefully, hopefully. He’s been through a lot and the way he has conducted himself is a good starting point for his life, not just his football life. And then to work so hard and be so unfortunate, it’s been a real challenge for him. He’s had lots of challenges, so I hope he can come through the next phase.”

Diaz names next club

Liverpool could soon have more contract concerns and Luis Diaz already knows his next club if things don’t work out. The Reds winger is set to see his deal expire in 2027 but Liverpool have been unable to extend his stay so far.

Rashford exit

Manchester United are so desperate to get rid of Marcus Rashford in January that they will reportedly consider sending him out on loan.

The forward has made clear he would like to leave the club and he may now have an easier avenue.

United are not willing to risk strengthening their rivals in the Premier League, so would only consider lending Rashford to a European club. Teams in Spain, France and Germany are reportedly monitoring the situation.

The first signing of the Ruben Amorim era may be complete, albeit for a player who cannot join just yet.

Reports claim that Diego Leon has signed join Manchester United in 2025, when he turns 18.
