Wayne Rooney is making Plymouth Argyle “train harder” as they attempt to turn things around over a hectic Christmas run.
Rooney has come under increasing pressure, with Plymouth currently second-bottom in the Championship and without a win in their last six games. Despite Plymouth’s busy run of games over the next few weeks, Rooney is demanding more from his players in training as they look to end their poor form.
“We’ve actually stepped the training up to train harder,” the Manchester United legend told BBC Radio Devon. “I feel it’s really important from now until mid-January that we step the training up because that gives your body a resilience to try and prevent injuries.
“We’re trying different things to make sure we get the players in the right condition to get through the next three weeks.” After Plymouth host Middlesbrough on Saturday, they travel to Coventry on Boxing Day and Oxford three days later.
They are then set to welcome Bristol City on New Year’s Day, before travelling to Stoke just three days later. “I spoke to the players and I feel it’s something we need to step up,” Rooney continued
“Yesterday we trained a lot harder then we normally would on that day because this time next week we’ll be playing a game. We have to get our players’ bodies into a shape and routine that they’re ready for that hit every three or four days going up towards mid-January really, to give them that almost mini pre-season to get them through to the end of the season.”
Plymouth chairman Simon Hallett recently gave Rooney a major vote of confidence, insisting the club has no plans to sack him despite their disappointing run of form. “We are all feeling the pressure,” Hallett said at a fans’ forum.

“Fans are feeling the pressure, the board is feeling the pressure and Wayne is feeling the pressure. What we are going to do is not think about getting rid of him and changing him. We are thinking about how we can support him.
“So there are no conversations going on about replacing Wayne but there are conversations going on about how we can support him to help him become the great coach we think is in there.”
