Wayne Rooney has been branded “clueless” after his Plymouth Argyle side ended the year bottom of the Championship following a 2-0 defeat against fellow strugglers Oxford.
Goals from Ciaron Brown and Przemyslaw Placheta earned Oxford a huge victory, with Gary Rowett’s side now three points above the relegation zone. Plymouth, however, are now four points from safety and have failed to pick up a win in their last nine league games.
Rooney was targeted with chants of “you’re getting sacked in the morning” by both the home and away fans and Plymouth supporters also took to social media to call for him to be axed. One fumed: “Pathetic, spineless. Clueless. Wayne Rooney get out of our f***ing club.”
Another wrote: “If Rooney had any respect for football he would resign tonight, go back to your wife and boys Wayne.” A third simply said: “If he has any pride he would walk.”
Another wrote: “Love the club to bits and will continue to do so until I die, hence why I’ve done Home & Away for nearly 20 years but it’s just not enjoyable, I feel so disconnected from the club it’s a joke. Make the decision Hallett or just walk Wayne, it can’t continue like this.”
Speaking ahead of the game, Rooney insisted he was still the right man for the job. “I believe I am. I know how football works, I’m not stupid. You need to pick up results. The biggest frustration for me all season is we look like two different teams home and away.
“So psychologically, is there an issue? It’s something we’re looking at. I’m sure the fans have questions and a lot of people from the outside will. I’ll do my best to answer them.”

Earlier this month, Plymouth’s owner and chairman Simon Hallett gave Rooney his public backing despite the club’s struggles. “What we are going to do is not think about getting rid of him and changing him,” Hallett said at a fans’ forum.
“We are thinking about how we can support him. So there are no conversations going on about replacing Wayne but there are conversations going on about how we can support him to help him become the great coach that we think is in there.”
