Wema Bank launches AlatPay to provide instant payment and digital storefronts for businesses

Foremost Nigerian bank, Wema Bank has today launched AlatPay, an instant digital payment solution designed to help small and medium businesses digitize their operations. The launch took place at the prestigious Four Points by Sheraton in Lagos.

Noting that “the future of cards is cardless”, Executive Director of Retail and Digital Business, Tunde Mabawonku, said that the world of payment is transitioning. In the next few years, he said cards will be cardless tokens that customers need to tap and go. He said this is the future of payments and Wema Bank is proud to play a major role in the future through AlatPay where merchants can carry out payments easily.

“AlatPay is positioning Nigerian merchants and small businesses to acquire transactions all over the world. Over the last few years, we discovered that small businesses find it difficult to acquire transactions. They either tell people to transfer money or pay cash or some other way of getting payment. But with AlatPay now what you need is just follow the very simple steps and you can acquire transactions from anywhere in the world,” Mr Mabawonku said.

He said merchants do not have to expose their own personal financial details because they now have a payment engine that makes transactions easy. So the plan really is to empower businesses to do a lot more.

AlatPay would cater to 70% of merchants facing payment challenges

Efficient and secure payment channels are essential in a dynamic business environment. A report by Stripe noted that over 70 per cent of businesses face online payment challenges. These challenges lead to delays in completing business and missed opportunities. As financial transactions evolve globally, seamless payment solutions become paramount to business sustainability as they have the capacity to boost efficiency by up to 40 per cent.

To help small businesses meet up with these unique challenges of globally evolving marketplaces, Wema Bank is launching AlatPay, an offshoot of its digital app, Alat. The bank says this introduction demonstrates its commitment to innovation and empowering businesses for optimal efficiency.

AlatPay is a digital payment solution for businesses. Built on a robust and secure platform, the solution guarantees easy setup and offers users multiple payment options. It also promises secure transactions, instant payment, and customizable storefronts among others. It offers seamless and comprehensive payment solutions that make online transactions effortless for businesses of all sizes.

To get started, businesses need to visit AlatPay.NG and click on Get Started. They will then be required to provide their email address where a one-time password (OTP) will be sent. Once the email is confirmed, the user will be required to create a merchant profile by filling in their personal details and then choosing a business category. Then an OTP will be sent to their phones to validate their details.

AlatPay also provides a digital storefront for businesses

Then they would be required to choose their preferred payment channels (cards, bank transfer etc) and then fill in account details to receive payments. This information will then be sent to the bank for approval which will be received within 24 hours. Once approved, the user will be granted access to AlatPay APIs to start receiving payments. They will then have to create and customise their storefront on the AlatPay portal. Once the store is created, click “Go Live” and copy the store’s URL for sharing with customers and on social media platforms.

Speaking about what this means for Wema Bank, Tunde Mabawonku said the bank prides itself on being an innovative bank.

“We have been in the industry for 79 years and one of the things we have done to remain competitive is by launching innovative products. Alat digital platform has really been the number one digital bank in Nigeria. What this does is to compete effectively across the globe. Customers now have a platform that stands on its own anywhere in the world. So what Alat and AlatPay are doing is to provide platforms to make solutions, to make payments and acquisitions better,” he finished.
